Profile Description

Solar Water Heating

Radiation levels in South Africa are one of the highest in the world making solar energy an obvious candidate as an alternate energy source.

Our solar water heating (SWH) systems are manufactured by Kwikot. The systems utilise flat plate collectors which have been proven over many years to be durable, efficient and well suited to the South African climate.

What savings can be expected?

On average +/- 50% of a household’s electricity bill is utilized for water heating – a correctly sized and installed solar water heating system will save approximately 80% of this. Thus the average household will save roughly 40% of their electricity bill.In addition a solar water heating system reduces household electricity requirements thus substantially reducing their carbon footprint – aiding our presently stressed environment. In short solar water heating assists the environment, saves the consumer money and helps to increase their energy independence.

How much does it cost?

At present our budget prices to supply and install Direct on-roof Kwikot solar water heating systems for a standard installation is as below;

Please note the above quoted prices are for Durban area only (+/- 30Km).

Are there any low cost options?

Yes. We have available a low pressure 110 litre system. Bear in mind however that this system is a low pressure evacuated tube system without electrical back-up and is therefore not suitable to all applications.

What is a standard installation?

A standard installation is an installation in the greater Durban area on a single storey, pitched, tiled roof which has a North Facing Side. If your installation is not standard you can contact us  for more information or to arrange a site visit to confirm your obligation free quotation.

What is the rebate?

This is a once off payment from Eskom to encourage the installation of solar water heating. It is administered by Deloitte and Touché and paid directly to the home owner in approximately 8 weeks from date of application. Our budget prices include all the plumbing and electrical requirements to claim the rebate.

Will I have hot water on a rainy day?

Yes. All of our systems are supplied with electrical back-up controlled with a digital timer and controller called a geyserwise. This state of the art device ensures that you always have hot water while also using as little electricity as possible.

Does the solar geyser have to be installed on the roof?

No. If the pitch of the roof has sufficient space to allow the tank to be installed in the roof while maintaining it at a position above the height of the panels the installation will work with the tank in the roof. This will involve an additional cost for a support platform that must be installed in the roof. If such space is not available, the tank can be separated from the panels with the use of a circulating pump to move water between the panels and the tank – when the tank is above the panels, water is circulated due to the natural effect of thermo-siphon. When a pump is used, a differential controller is used to ensure that water only moves from the panel to the tank when the water in the panel is hotter than the water in the tank. The simplest, most cost effective and efficient installation which we recommend is a close coupled on roof thermo-siphon system.

Please feel free to contact one of our consultants who will be happy to explain this in greater detail.

Are there any low cost options?

Yes. We have available a low pressure 110L system which retails for just R 6,999.00 including installation. The best part is that it qualifies for an Eskom Rebate of R 4,240 thus costing you just R 2,759! Bear in mind however that this system is a low pressure evacuated tube system without electrical back-up and is therefore not suitable to all applications
